The Atlas Lions stage a dramatic comeback to defeat the Dutch and strengthen their status as serious World Cup contenders.

Morocco secured a memorable victory by eliminating the Netherlands 3-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw following extra time in the FIFA World Cup Round of 32. Played in Monterrey, the thrilling encounter earned the Atlas Lions a place in the Round of 16, where they will face Canada.

Morocco dominated much of the match but were repeatedly denied by Dutch goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen, who delivered an outstanding performance. Achraf Hakimi, making his 100th appearance for the national team, struck the crossbar, while several other Moroccan chances were brilliantly saved.

Against the run of play, Cody Gakpo gave the Netherlands the lead in the 72nd minute with a clinical finish following a lightning-fast counterattack. The Dutch forward, who had recently revealed the heartbreaking loss of his unborn child, was embraced by his teammates after scoring.

Just when the Netherlands appeared to be heading for victory, Issa Diop equalized in stoppage time with a powerful header from a cross delivered by Chemsdine Taldi. Neither side managed to find a winner during extra time despite creating several clear-cut opportunities.

The penalty shootout ultimately favored Morocco. The Dutch missed three of their spot-kicks, while Ismail Saibari calmly converted the decisive penalty to send the Atlas Lions into the next round.

Four years after their historic run to the World Cup semifinals, Morocco once again demonstrated the strength of its talented generation. Under head coach Mohamed Ouahbi, the team combined tactical discipline, technical quality, and remarkable mental resilience. The Atlas Lions will now turn their attention to their Round of 16 clash against Canada, with hopes of extending their impressive World Cup campaign and potentially setting up a quarterfinal showdown with France.
