The Spurs’ interim coach is facing a disastrous start, worsened by a heavy 5–2 defeat against Atlético Madrid and a controversial decision involving his goalkeeper.
Igor Tudor’s start as Tottenham Hotspur’s interim manager is already turning into a nightmare. Appointed only a few weeks ago, the Croatian coach has now suffered a fourth consecutive defeat following Tottenham’s heavy 5–2 loss to Atlético Madrid in the round of 16. The result deepens the sporting crisis at the London club and raises serious questions about the coach’s future.
The match at the Metropolitano Stadium quickly became a disaster for Tottenham. In just 23 minutes, Atlético Madrid were already leading 4–0. Defensive mistakes piled up, particularly from young goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky. Selected ahead of regular first-choice goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, Kinsky made two costly errors that allowed Marcos Llorente and Julián Álvarez to score.
In response, Tudor made a shocking decision: substituting Kinsky after only 17 minutes of play. Such a move is extremely rare in professional football. After the match, Tudor explained that he wanted to “protect the player and the team,” but the decision drew widespread criticism from analysts and former players.
According to several sources close to the club, some members of the Tottenham squad are already questioning Tudor’s ability to turn the situation around. The statistics are worrying: four matches, four defeats, and fourteen goals conceded.
Tottenham’s leadership now faces a difficult dilemma. Dismissing Tudor so soon after appointing him would be an admission of poor judgment, but keeping him could worsen the crisis as Tottenham struggles to avoid a disastrous season.
The presence of former manager Mauricio Pochettino in the stands during the match in Madrid has also fueled speculation about a possible return. For many supporters, he remains the ideal candidate to stabilize the club.
In the coming days, Tottenham’s hierarchy will have to make a crucial decision about the team’s future.
