Afrima 2026: Nigerian Stars Dominate, While Congolese Artists Shine on the Sidelines

The All Africa Music Awards celebrated Nigerian excellence, but the Congolese music scene remains vibrant despite missing major awards.

The 9th edition of the All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA), held in Lagos on Sunday, January 11, 2026, showcased the impressive dominance of Nigerian artists. Burna Boy took home Album of the Year for No Sign of Weakness, while rising star Shallipopi won Song of the Year with his viral hit Laho. Afrobeats heavyweight Rema claimed three awards, including the prestigious Artist of the Year.

Despite not securing any major awards this year, artists from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) still captured attention. Names like Fally Ipupa, Innos’B, and Gaz Mawete continue to stand out on the continental stage. Their absence from the winners' list does not diminish their growing influence in afropop and Congolese rumba—genres increasingly captivating international audiences.

The 2026 AFRIMA ceremony also highlighted talent from across Africa. Senegal’s Bakhaw Dioum was named Songwriter of the Year, while Algerian DJ Moh Green was crowned DJ of the Year. Tanzania’s Juma Jux earned the title of Best Male Artist in East Africa.

Although Congolese artists remained on the sidelines of this year’s awards, their cultural impact remains strong. With continued creativity and international appeal, they may very well take center stage in the next edition.
